Report on HVC Novice Field Trial at Chiddingfold, 21st October 2006

The HVC were invited to hold a Novice Trial at Chiddingfold by Ezio Venturi on 21st October. Our judges were Jim Field and to assist him we invited the previous Field Trial Secretary of the HVC, John Digby, who flew in from his new home in Spain. We were delighted that of an entry of 15 dogs, 9 vizslas were present in the initial running order with 8 actually running on the day.

The day was overcast with light showers when we arrived, a light cool, wind meant the birds decided to take shelter in surrounding woodland rather than in the superb plantation that was central to the site. Sue Harris’s opening run set the day with a point in thick hedgerow followed by a flush and a retrieve from the adjoining field. As the dogs entered the plantation area we were presented with a back wind which the dogs handled well to achieve points but unfortunately the birds ran back into the woods rather than taking flight.

As the day warmed and the dogs turned into the wind, dogs began to fall by the wayside, with ‘missed birds’ and ‘running in’ accounting for most eliminations.
Five dogs, Harris’s HV, Szajani Komica, Barnard’s HV, Daxpack Best Mate, Simpson’s HV,Fiscardo’s Pallas Athena, Dear’s GSP, Swifthouse Cranberry and Spree’s Wei Brakabreeze Hawke, all made the second round which saw Sue once again in hedge row, this time pushing the birds forward until forced to fly over the guns. The dog pointed and flushed and once again retrieved from a field. Dear’s GSP made a good retrieve in thick woodland but despite a lot of effort the other remaining dogs were unable to complete their cards.

Harris’s HV and Dear’s GSP were the only two dogs to be taken to water, this time a running stream which ponded to form a small eddy into which the retrieve was thrown. The entry was steep but both dogs managed well, bringing the birds confidently to hand.

Sue Harris’s HV Szajani Komica was awarded the Daxpack Shield for her 4th place - a new award of the Russetmantle ‘Most Promising Vizsla’ Cup. Sue also received the Club’s new permanent gifts of pewter mounted pheasants for each of the two awards.
Nigel Dear’s GSP Swifthouse Cranberry was awarded a Cof M: The Holmes Cup, Guns award went to Chris Spree, Brakabreeze Hawke.

The HVC would like to thank Mr Ezio Venturi for his generosity, the Judges - Jim and John, the guns for their excellent shooting, the ‘Picking up Dog’, Judith Curtis - who stepped in at the last minute to Steward for us, and the competitors for their camaraderie and good sportsmanship that all contributed, making the day so successful.
