Glaucoma

Here in the UK there are increasing reports of glaucoma in the Vizsla. The breed is currently on the BVA (British Veterinary Association) Schedule B – which means that incidence levels are being carefully monitored. Glaucoma is a condition where there is a high pressure build up inside the eye. There are many potential causes of glaucoma. In the vizsla the most common cause of primary glaucoma is goniodysgenesis . This is a defect where the drainage angle is faulty and which may result in a blockage resulting in failure of normal drainage of fluid . Not all dogs with goniodysgenesis will develop glaucoma but as the defect is hereditary affected dogs should not be bred from.

The HVC is supporting research in to glaucoma in the vizsla and AHT ophthalmologists will be present at both our 2015 shows for the purpose of gonioscopy testing.

On 6th November 2015 at Newmarket the Animal Heath Trust will be running a Hungarian Vizsla Health Day.The day will involve 4 lectures, gonioscopy eye testing and cheek swabbing, tours of the AHT and a complimentary lunch. Here is the programme – it will be a very interesting day
